On four weekends, composers and musicians will revive selected sound machines on display in the exhibition. We want to learn what the apparatuses have to tell us, what secrets they hold, and let their sonorous materiality enchant us. To hear their stories the IMA Institute of Media Archaeology will commission works, which will be composed in the studios of the exhibition.

Sound machines between experiment and media technology

12 03 09 – 14 03 09

The symposium will explore sound machines during the transition from experiment to media technology, both in instrument-based and aesthetic respects. At this threshold sound machines are essential for the development of a new musical aesthetics. The conference will discuss the inspiring creative and technical contexts that give rise to new forms of sound art.

Workshops & DA CAPO on thursday
Every first Thursday of the month (with the exception of 1 January 2009) the exhibition will be open until 10:00 p.m., offering special events that centre around a main theme. Depending on the event, the exhibition space will be transformed into a concert hall, a cinema or a space for lectures and discussions.
